Seventeenth-century philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, famously wrote that human life in its natural state is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.” Hobbes argued that our instincts tend toward war in a bid to attain dominance over others; thus the establishment of government would be necessary to maintain law and order.
We need to always pursue making the most fair laws possible, recognizing that there is no law that will be perfect in a world where everyone has their own opinion of what is fair and just. But as much as it is possible, we must try to bring peace. The purpose of the law is to make us conscious of our sin. The law says you must stop at the stop sign, even if no one else is approaching from the other directions. That may not apply to someone whose child just quit breathing and they are trying quickly and safely to get to a hospital. But we must make every effort to try.
But God has not left us without a just and fair “law”. The love of the Father for all humankind.
“For God so loved the world that He sent His One and Only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but will have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)“Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what is says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the ‘perfect law’ that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:22-25)
